Tropical Monsoon Forest

Distribution and climate: Tropical Monsoon Forest can be located at Southern China, Northern Australia and India. It has high temperature at 26degree and high rainfall over 1500mm. Wet and dry condition are cause by monsoon wind. Northern Monsoon winds blow from from October to January. Southern Monsoon winds bring heavy rain to India from June to September. On the world map, tropical monsoon forest are mainly found between 10 and 25(degree)North and South of the equator.

Structure: As compared to Tropical Rainforest, the trees of Tropical Monsoon is short as it is lack of water do not allow trees to grow great height. Tress of canopy layer can grow to 25 to 3om in height. They are more spread out than tropical rainforest. Plants like creepers, vines, epiphytes and parasitic are found on this layer. Understorey layer are 15m in height. Bamboo thickets and grasses grow densely during wet season while they are less densely during dry season.

Diversity There are fewer species than tropical rainforest due to inconsistent rainfall. There are about 200 species in one hectare of the forest. Trees are mostly hardwood and some commercially valuable species like teak, sandalwood and sal. Sandalwood can be use to make incense and sal are important source of fuel wood. Bamboo and grasses are common species found in the undergrowth layer.

Density: Less dense than tropical rainforest thus no inter-locking canopy. More sunlight can to pass through canopy layer, resulting in dense undergrowth. Thus, bamboo thickets and grasses develop well.

Leaves: Deciduous forest, it shed leaves during dry season but grow back quickly in cold season.
Leaves are waxy and drip tip.

Flowers and fruits: Trees species bear flower and fruits during dry season while they are leafless.

Barks and branches: Thick and coarse barks to protect the heat and dryness during dry season. Help trees to withstand the extreme heat from natural forest fires which break out occasionally. Branches are found around the middle of the trunk.

Roots: Deep roots to trap water sources deep under the ground because rainfall is not regular throughout the year.
